Disco AngolaDavid Zwirner - 525 West 19th Street
New York, UNITED STATES
Thursday 22-Mar-2012 - Saturday 28-Apr-2012
A solo exhibition by Stan Douglas.
For Disco Angola, Stan Douglas resumes the fictional role of a photo-journalist, in this instance a regular in the burgeoning disco underground of the early 1970s New York. By researching archival photographs, period costumes and décor, Douglas recreated snapshots from Angola and New York, presenting new photographs of a past historical moment to probe wider questions about the medium of photography. Douglas’s new character travelled frequently to Angola where civil war broke out in 1974, and the resulting images reveal subtle parallels between the burgeoning disco culture and the Angolan liberation struggles.
