When the "FLAG Art Foundation":http://www.flagartfoundation.org decided it wanted to showcase an exhibition of works exploring how scale is used in contemporary art, it decided to expand its search beyond the art world to find a curator.
The foundation thought "big." Immediately, one name came to mind: Shaq.
That's NBA superstar Shaquille O'Neal.
"In this case, we thought, 'size,'" said Stephanie Roach, director of the FLAG Art Foundation. "'Let's think, who would be a totally outrageous, ama...
Consider this a preview of sorts, as Oliver Cartwright and Melanie Benoit have begun a larger series of collaborative work. “The State We’re In” finds Los Angeles-based Benoit providing the dissolving deer drawing and Mr. Cartwright adding the couple. They work digitally, trading images from across continent and Atlantic. It works in music, and it works here as well.

The Infernal Comedy, based on true story of Austrian serial killer, among highlights of Barbican's plans for coming yearIt might not be the cheeriest night out, watching John Malkovich as a resurrected Austrian serial killer on stage with a baroque orchestra and two sopranos singing arias about murder and abandonment, but it will, the Barbican's artistic director cheerfully suggests, be one of his personal highlights."It's a kind of 21st-century version of an 18th-century melodrama," said Graham...

Let's face it: art fairs are exhausting and a terrible way to see work. But they're essential for galleries and artistsLast week was Armory week in New York. If ever there was a surfeit of contemporary art in one place, then now is the time. It was centred on the Armory Show, America's biggest art fair, featuring most of the world's top commercial galleries, as well as younger, emerging spaces from across the globe. Alongside it was a plethora of other fairs, including the ultra blue-chip Art De...

Super guy and very talented illustrator Bradford Haubrich will be opening his first solo showing next week (March 19, 2010), at Philadelphia’s TrickGo (1135 Pine St). Expect dense, quirky drawings with a solid sense of humor and a light hearted take on life. Brad has also produced a limited edition t-shirt for the event – especially nice for those with a hankering for a new walking canvas. And, for the those with extra-limited taste buds, he’ll also be raffling off a 1 of 1 pair of Keds.
