BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art proudly announces a major exhibition of internationally renowned American artist Jenny Holzer opening on Friday 5 March 2010.

IFor her new exhibition, Holzer will present work spanning the last two decades, filling two floors of BALTIC's galleries. Including painting and sculpture as well as her spectacular LED installations, the exhibition is Holzer's largest and most comprehensive for fifteen years and the first od it's scale to be shown in the UK.

    Baltic, GatesheadYou ride the lift up the high glass tower of Baltic to the viewing box at the top. The work of art scrolls out in long lines of glowing letters across the entire floor of the gallery below. The lights are gold, the darkness is soothing, the words are travelling at a pace so steady it is almost calmingly hypnotic – until you start to read what they say.My nose broke in the grass. My eyes are sore from moving against your palm. Full of swallowed blood. The soldier bites your stoma...

    We live in a jaded world where we are bombarded by information, much of it in the form of text. It must have been quite different when Jenny Holzer was setting out in the 1970s. She made her name in the pre-digital media stone age on the cutting edge of the New York underground art scene, pitching for the attention of passers-by with fly posters carrying a few well-chosen words pursuing philosophical and political themes. ...
