Vibrant and spectacular, Balinese dance has a complex history - drawing on theatrical and literary traditions across Asia it was transformed in response to the arrival of Europeans in the early 20th century. The Balinese conceive of the body as recalcitrant and fragmentary and their dance exemplifies a unique act of will and command. The lecture explores contradictory European and Balinese imaginings about dance with performances by the celebrated Balinese dancer, Ni Mad Pujawati.
